1969 Topps #458 Curt Blefary

About Curt Blefary
Traded to Houston before the 1969 season, Blefary became the Astros' starting first baseman, batting .253 with 12 home runs, 67 RBIs, and a career-high 77 walks. On May 4, 1969, he took part in all seven double plays the Astros turned in a game against the San Francisco Giants, tying the Astros' single-game record. That season he and teammate Don Wilson became the first interracial roommates in National League history.
Curtis Leroy Blefary, born July 5, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Mahwah, New Jersey, was a left-handed hitting outfielder, first baseman, and catcher who played eight major league seasons for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and San Diego Padres. Signed by the Yankees in 1962, he was claimed by Baltimore on waivers in 1963 and broke into the majors in 1965, batting .260 with 22 home runs to win the American League Rookie of the Year award. He was a key contributor to the Orioles' 1966 World Series championship team, appearing in that Series. Across his career Blefary moved between the outfield, first base, and catcher as managers sought to keep his bat in the lineup. Traded to Houston in December 1968, he later played for the Yankees, Athletics, and Padres before retiring in 1972 with a .237 career batting average, 112 home runs, and 382 RBIs in 974 games. He struggled with alcoholism in his later years and died in 2001.
