About Hector Torres

Torres's 1969 Topps card, card number 526 with the Houston Astros, belongs to the set's sixth print series. It follows his 1968 rookie season, in which he broke in as Houston's opening day shortstop and appeared in 128 games, mostly at shortstop. It is his rookie card and carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy design recognizing that debut season.

Hector Epitacio Torres Marroquin, born September 16, 1945 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was a shortstop who played nine major league seasons between 1968 and 1977. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1962, he reached the majors with the Houston Astros, then moved on to the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, a second stint with Houston, and the San Diego Padres before finishing his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1977, where he was the club's first-ever opening day shortstop. He hit the first grand slam in Blue Jays history, off Ron Guidry, on June 27, 1977. A light-hitting, glove-first infielder, he batted .216 with 18 home runs and 115 RBI over 622 career games, primarily at shortstop with time at second and third base. After retiring as a player he managed in the minor leagues and in the Mexican League, including a league title with the Florence Blue Jays in 1985. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
