About Larry Shepard

Card #384, in the set's fourth print series, shows Larry Shepard for his second and final season managing the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 1969 club opened strong and was 84-73 and third in the National League East, with Roberto Clemente batting .336 under him, when Shepard was let go the morning after a doubleheader sweep on September 25, 1969, with five games left; Alex Grammas went 4-1 the rest of the way, and the Pirates finished third at 88-74.

Larry Shepard spent decades in professional baseball as a pitcher, minor league manager, and big league pitching coach. A right-hander out of Lakewood, Ohio who grew up in Montreal and attended McGill University, he pitched in the minors from 1941 through 1956, missing time for Army service in World War II. As a playing manager he won three straight 20-win seasons at Billings, then guided Pittsburgh Pirates farm clubs at Lincoln, Salt Lake City, and Columbus to five league championships while developing future big leaguers such as Steve Blass, Manny Sanguillen, and Willie Stargell. After a year as Philadelphia Phillies pitching coach in 1967, he managed the Pirates before returning to coaching. He later served as pitching coach for Sparky Anderson's Cincinnati Reds Big Red Machine, helping shape a staff that won five division titles, four pennants, and two World Series from 1970 through 1976, and he finished his career coaching the San Francisco Giants.
