1969 Topps #152 Tommie Sisk

About Tommie Sisk
Card #152 is a second-series card in the 1969 Topps set and the last one to show Sisk in a Pittsburgh uniform. The back sums up 1968: 33 games, 11 of them starts, a 5-5 record and a 3.28 ERA that was the second-lowest of his career. He was already gone by Opening Day -- on March 28, 1969, the Pirates sent him and catcher Chris Cannizzaro to the brand-new San Diego Padres for Ron Davis and Bobby Klaus. The expansion Padres lost 110 games and Sisk absorbed his share, going 2-13 in 53 appearances with six saves and a 4.78 ERA.
Tommie Wayne Sisk, born April 12, 1942, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander out of Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1960. He was in the majors by July 19, 1962, still 20 years old, and the debut was a rough one: he started against the New York Mets and was gone after 1 1/3 innings, charged with three runs on two hits and three walks. He stuck anyway, working out of the Pittsburgh bullpen and then the rotation for seven seasons before one-year stops with San Diego and the Chicago White Sox, who acquired him for Jerry Nyman on March 30, 1970. Across 316 games and 99 starts he went 40-49 with a 3.92 ERA, 19 complete games, four shutouts, 10 saves and 441 strikeouts in 928 1/3 innings. He was no help at the plate, hitting .094 with a single extra-base hit in 235 career at-bats, and he pitched his last big league game on June 14, 1970.
