The story on this card
1969 Topps #12, the National League Strikeout Leaders card from the set's league-leaders subset, pictures the top three punch-out men of 1968: Bob Gibson of the Cardinals, Fergie Jenkins of the Cubs, and Bill Singer of the Dodgers. Gibson led with 268 strikeouts during his Year of the Pitcher season, going 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA and 13 shutouts. Jenkins was next with 260 strikeouts, going 20-15 for Chicago in the second of what became six straight 20-win seasons. Singer rounded out the trio with 227 strikeouts for Los Angeles, going 13-17 despite a 2.88 ERA. All three came back with big 1969 seasons: Gibson went 20-13, Jenkins led the NL in strikeouts, and Singer won 20 games for the Dodgers.
Bob Gibson pitched all seventeen of his seasons for the Cardinals, a two-time Cy Young winner and two-time World Series Most Valuable Player whose 1.12 earned run average in 1968 still measures pitching dominance. Fergie Jenkins was the control artist at the front of the Cubs rotation, winning 20 games in six straight seasons and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award on his way to 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and a 1991 Hall of Fame plaque. Bill Singer - Dodgers and Angels right-hander who won 20 games in both leagues, threw a 1970 no-hitter against the Phillies, and made two All-Star teams over a 14-year career shot through with injuries.
