About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset: six categories from the 1968 season - batting average, RBI, home runs, ERA, pitching (wins) and strikeouts - with the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair, and the top three men on each card (#9 names four, after a tie for third in American League wins).

The story on this card

Card 4 in the 1969 Topps set is a League Leaders board, recapping the National League RBI race of 1968. Willie McCovey topped the league that year, driving in 105 runs for the San Francisco Giants while playing first base. Ron Santo, the Chicago Cubs third baseman, and teammate Billy Williams, the Cubs left fielder, tied for the runner-up spot behind him, each driving in 98 runs. The card groups the three sluggers together with their team affiliations noted, the National League's top run producers from the 1968 season. It belongs to the first print series of the 1969 set.

Willie McCovey, "Stretch," was the towering left-handed slugger who hit behind Willie Mays in San Francisco -- a three-time National League home run champion, the 1969 Most Valuable Player, and a Hall of Famer with 521 career home runs. Ron Santo played third base for the Chicago Cubs through the 1960s, a nine-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner who hid his diabetes for years, later called Cubs games on the radio, and reached the Hall of Fame in 2012. Billy Williams was the quiet, metronomic third star of the Ernie Banks and Ron Santo Cubs, a sweet-swinging left fielder who won a batting title, a Rookie of the Year award, and once played 1,117 games in a row.
