The story on this card
Gutierrez's 1969 Topps card, #16, is a Rookie Stars issue from the set's first print series, shared with fellow rookie Rich Robertson and picturing Gutierrez with the San Francisco Giants, the club he opened that season with before a midseason trade sent him to the Tigers. He split the year between both teams, batting .236 in 32 games with 9 runs while playing mostly shortstop. It stands as his recognized rookie card. Venezuelan shortstop Cesar Gutierrez played for the Giants and Tigers from 1967 to 1971. On June 21, 1970, he went seven-for-seven in a doubleheader game, becoming only the second major leaguer in history to do so without making an out.
Rich Robertson's 1969 Topps card, #16, is a Rookie Stars issue from the set's first print series - a regular-run card. Shared with fellow Giants prospect Cesar Gutierrez, it is Robertson's recognized rookie card and first Topps issue. He worked into the San Francisco rotation and bullpen that season, going 1-3 over 44.1 innings in 17 appearances with 7 starts. Paired rookie-stars cards like this one were Topps' standard way of introducing multiple unproven players from one club on a single card. Right-handed pitcher who spent his whole big-league career with the San Francisco Giants from 1966 to 1971, topping out with 183.2 innings in his busiest 1970 season.
