1969 Topps #17 Mike Marshall

About Mike Marshall
This card shows Marshall with the expansion Seattle Pilots, whose roster he joined as an original member through the October 1968 draft, taken with the 53rd pick. Used mainly as a starter for the only time in his career, he went 3-10 with a 5.13 ERA over 20 games, 14 of them starts, striking out 47. Card number 17 comes from the set's first print series, and his rookie card is his 1968 Topps card. Seattle's lone season preceded the club's move to Milwaukee, and Marshall's contract was purchased by the Houston Astros after the year covered here.
Michael Grant Marshall was a right-handed pitcher from Adrian, Michigan, who spent 14 major league seasons with nine clubs between 1967 and 1981. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent, he did not reach the majors until the Detroit Tigers brought him up in 1967. Seattle took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and after stops in Houston he found his footing with the Montreal Expos, leading the league in games pitched and saves. Traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Willie Davis after the 1973 season, Marshall set a major league record with 106 relief appearances in 1974 and won the National League Cy Young Award, the first reliever to do so. He earned two All-Star selections and closed out his career with the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets. Off the field he earned a doctorate in exercise physiology from Michigan State University and later taught his own pitching mechanics.
