About Chico Salmon

Drafted by the expansion Seattle Pilots in October 1968, Salmon was traded to Baltimore before the season for pitcher Gene Brabender and infielder Gordy Lund, and became Earl Weaver's top utility infielder on a pennant winner. He hit .297 in 52 games, highlighted by a four-hit, two-homer game against the Pilots in August. His 1969 Topps card, issued in the first series, pictures him with his brief club, the Seattle Pilots.

Ruthford Eduardo Salmon, known as Chico, was a Panamanian utility man who spent nine big league seasons, 1964 to 1972, with the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles. Signed out of Colon, Panama, he worked his way up through four different farm systems before Cleveland called him up in June 1964, when their regular third baseman fell seriously ill and opened a spot. He never claimed one position, playing all four infield spots plus the outfield over his career, which earned him the nickname Super Sub. His best season at the plate came as a rookie, hitting .307, and he flashed the bat again in a 1966 stretch run filling in at shortstop. Traded to Baltimore in 1969, he became Earl Weaver's top reserve infielder on three straight pennant winners and the 1970 World Series champions, delivering a pinch-hit single in that Series. He was known around the league for his colorful personality as much as his versatility. He died in Panama in 2000.
