About Jose Vidal

1969 Topps #322, from the set's third print series, shows Vidal with the expansion Seattle Pilots franchise. He played 18 games for Seattle in 1969, his final major league season, hitting .192 with a home run and seven runs scored. On May 19, 1969, the Pilots traded him to the New York Yankees, and he never appeared in another big league game.

Jose Vidal Nicolas, a Dominican outfielder from Batey Lechuga in El Seibo, signed with the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent before the 1958 season. He built a reputation as a strong minor league hitter with shaky defense, leading his league in outfield errors three times. In 1960 he hit .342 with 17 home runs for the Hobbs Pirates, and in 1963 he won the California League Triple Crown with the Reno Silver Sox, batting .340 with 40 home runs and 162 RBI to earn league MVP. After a big 1966 season with the Triple-A Portland Beavers, he was called up by the Cleveland Indians that September and made his debut as a pinch hitter against the Boston Red Sox. He played parts of four major league seasons, 1966-1969, with the Indians and Seattle Pilots, finishing with a .164 career average, three home runs and 10 RBI in 88 games. He later played in Japan for the Nishitetsu Lions in 1971.
