1969 Topps #321 Jim McAndrew

About Jim McAndrew
Card #321, series 3, shows McAndrew with the Mets. He entered 1969 spring training with high hopes but battled a finger injury, a shoulder strain, and a slow start before turning it around in August, throwing three straight complete games and stringing together 23 consecutive scoreless innings. On September 10 he pitched 11 innings against Montreal as the Mets moved into first place for the first time in franchise history. He finished the season 6-7 with a 3.47 ERA in 27 appearances as the Mets went on to win the World Series, though he did not appear in it. This is a recognized rookie card.
Jim McAndrew was a right-handed pitcher born January 11, 1944, in Lost Nation, Iowa, the oldest of four children on a farm where his father raised chickens and grew corn. He played baseball and basketball at the University of Iowa, earning a psychology degree before the Mets drafted him in the 11th round of the 1965 draft. McAndrew debuted on July 21, 1968, filling in for Nolan Ryan against Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. Despite a hard-luck start in which the Mets were shut out in his first four appearances, he finished 4-7 with a 2.28 ERA as a rookie. He pitched for the Mets from 1968 through 1973, working mostly as a mid-rotation starter behind Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, and was a member of the 1969 World Series champions and the 1973 National League pennant winners, though he did not pitch in either Series. After the 1973 season the Mets traded him to the San Diego Padres, and he closed out his career there in 1974. He finished with a 37-53 record and a 3.65 ERA over 161 games.
