About Tommie Agee

Agee rebounded fully in 1969, leading the Mets in games, at-bats, runs, home runs and RBIs while batting leadoff, including a home run that reached Shea Stadium's upper deck, still the only ball ever hit there. He then homered twice in the NLCS sweep of Atlanta, and in Game 3 of the World Series he led off with a home run off Jim Palmer and made two famous catches as the Mets stunned Baltimore. This 1969 Topps #364, from print series 4, catches him mid-Mets tenure at the height of the Miracle season.

Tommie Agee was a center fielder who broke in with Cleveland in 1962, moved to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team trade after the 1964 season, and became the everyday center fielder and leadoff man for the 1969 Miracle Mets. He grew up in Mobile, Alabama with future Mets teammate Cleon Jones, then signed with Cleveland after one season at Grambling State. In Chicago he won the 1966 AL Rookie of the Year award and a Gold Glove after homering more than 20 times and stealing more than 40 bases as a rookie, then made a second All-Star team in 1967. Traded to New York after the 1967 season, he led the 1969 Mets in homers and RBIs, homered twice in the NLCS sweep of Atlanta, then led off Game 3 of the World Series with a home run off Jim Palmer and made two legendary catches in that game as the Mets upset Baltimore. He closed his career with Houston and St. Louis and died in 2001.
