1969 Topps #127 Kevin Collins

About Kevin Collins
Collins made the Opening Day roster for the second time in 1969 and got a shot at third base behind veteran Ed Charles once Amos Otis's trial there fizzled, but he hit .150 in 16 games and was optioned to Tidewater in early May; rookie Wayne Garrett took the job. On June 15 the Mets sent him and three other minor leaguers to Montreal for Donn Clendenon. With the Expos he played 52 games at second and third, batting .240. Card #127 shows him with the New York Mets, a second-series card from the year he changed teams.
Kevin Collins was a Massachusetts-born infielder who signed with the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 1964, straight out of Springfield Tech High School, where the left-handed-hitting shortstop led his club to two Western Massachusetts championships. He was 17 when he signed, and the first-year roster rules of the era pushed him onto the big-league club the following spring, long before he was ready. A ruptured shoulder muscle suffered while warming up at Candlestick Park in April 1965 cost him surgery and four months. Collins spent parts of four seasons in New York, mostly at third base and second base; he collected three doubles in three at-bats off Juan Marichal in June 1968, then had his jaw broken in Houston that August on a hard slide by Doug Rader that touched off a bench-clearing brawl. Traded to the Montreal Expos in June 1969 in the package that brought Donn Clendenon to the Mets, he gave the Expos their first pinch-hit home run, a three-run shot off Jim Bunning. He finished with the Detroit Tigers in 1970 and 1971, working mainly as a pinch hitter and rooming with Gates Brown, then left the game for the automotive supply business. He batted .209 with 6 home runs over 201 games.
