About Larry Haney

Haney's 1969 Topps card (#209), issued in the set's second series, pictures him with the expansion Seattle Pilots, who took him with the 32nd pick in the October 1968 expansion draft. The photo is his 1968 card's picture flipped, a reversed image that makes Haney, a right-handed thrower, look like a left-handed catcher. He backed up Jerry McNertney in Seattle before being traded to Oakland that June, finishing the season with a combined .193 average, 4 home runs and 19 RBI across the two clubs.

Larry Haney was a defensive-minded catcher who spent 12 seasons in the majors from 1966 to 1978, backing up behind the plate for the Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Pilots, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. Signed by Baltimore out of high school in Virginia, he made his debut on July 27, 1966 and homered in his second big-league at-bat off Cleveland's John O'Donoghue. Haney's calling card was his glove: a .985 career fielding percentage and an arm that caught 39 percent of attempted base stealers. He was on Oakland's roster for the entire 1974 championship season, appearing in two World Series games as the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. Across 480 career games he hit .215 with 12 home runs and 73 RBI. After retiring as a player, Haney spent decades in the Brewers organization as a bullpen coach and pitching coach.
