1969 Topps #111 Johnny Morris

About Johnny Morris
Card #111 in the 1969 Topps second series shows Morris with the expansion Seattle Pilots, the club that had just taken him in the 1968 American League expansion draft. He split the season between Seattle and Triple-A, appearing in 6 games for the Pilots with a 6.39 ERA. This is his rookie card.
John Wallace Morris was a left-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors between 1966 and 1974. A native of Lewes, Delaware, he broke in with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1966, then pitched for the Baltimore Orioles in 1968 before being taken by the Seattle Pilots in the 1968 American League expansion draft. He split 1969 between the Pilots and Triple-A, then continued with the franchise after its move to Milwaukee, working as both a starter and a reliever for the Brewers in 1970 before shifting almost exclusively to the bullpen in 1971. He closed his career with the San Francisco Giants from 1972 through 1974. Used almost exclusively in relief, all but ten of his 132 career appearances came out of the bullpen, and he finished with an 11-7 record, a 3.95 ERA, 137 strikeouts and 2 saves. He was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
