About Clyde King
King's playing days are far behind him on this card, which catches him at the start of his managerial run with the San Francisco Giants, a club he took over for the 1969 season after piloting their Phoenix farm team the year before. With Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry in the fold, King's Giants won 90 games in his first year at the helm, finishing second in the new National League West.
Clyde King was a right-handed pitcher who spent seven seasons in the majors, almost all of it with the Brooklyn Dodgers, before closing his playing days with the Cincinnati Reds in 1953. Signed out of the University of North Carolina in 1944, he debuted with Brooklyn that June and worked mostly out of the bullpen, posting his best season in 1951 with 14 wins and 121.1 innings pitched. He was a member of the pennant-winning 1947 and 1952 Dodgers clubs but never appeared in a World Series. Arm trouble shortened his career, and he retired after 1953 with 32 wins, 25 losses and a 4.14 ERA over 200 games. King went on to a long second career as a minor-league manager, big-league pitching coach, and manager of the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees, later serving the Yankees as general manager and special advisor.
