The story on this card
Rule 5 pick of the Dodgers that winter, Darwin made the club in 1969 still working as a pitcher, appearing in three games out of the bullpen for 3.2 innings before the club sent him down to AAA Spokane for the rest of the season. This card is his Topps debut and rookie card, a Rookie Stars subset entry for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, shared with John Miller and Tommy Dean, part of print series seven, a high number. A pitcher who converted to the outfield in the minors and became a power-hitting regular with the Minnesota Twins in the early 1970s, later a longtime Dodgers scout.
Miller's 1969 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, his final major league campaign, is captured on card #641, a high number from the set's seventh print series. The card is a multi-player Rookie Stars subset entry shared with Bobby Darwin and Tommy Dean of the San Diego Padres, making it a recognized rookie card for all three men pictured. John Miller, a first baseman and outfielder who reached the majors with the 1966 Yankees and 1969 Dodgers, is one of only two players ever to homer in both his first and last major league at-bats.
Dean opened 1969 in the minors before Buzzie Bavasi, now running the expansion San Diego Padres, acquired him nine days into the season. He became the Padres' most-used shortstop as a rookie, starting 81 of the club's 162 games and batting .176 with two home runs. This high-number card, #641 from the seventh print series, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with Bobby Darwin and John Miller, pairing Dean's Dodgers background with his new Padres club. A shortstop signed out of Mississippi for a $60,000 bonus, Dean became San Diego's most-used shortstop in the Padres' first season before finishing his career there in 1971.
