About this card

This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.

The story on this card

By 1969 Jimenez had moved into the Pittsburgh organization, playing outfield for the Columbus Jets in the International League after his lone Yankees cup of coffee five years earlier. This Topps Rookie Stars card pairs him with pitcher Jim Shellenback under the Pirates banner, and it exists in two printing states distinguished by the black outline around the card's title. Dominican outfielder who batted .333 in his only major-league game for the 1964 Yankees, then spent years starring in Triple-A before becoming a scout back home in the Dominican Republic.

Shellenback began 1969 with the Pirates, making eight relief appearances, before Pittsburgh traded him to Washington on May 17 for pitcher Frank Kreutzer. Under rookie manager Ted Williams he found more work as a reliever and won his first American League game on June 12 against Oakland, finishing 4-7. Two printed states exist, told apart by a black outline on the Rookie Stars title, and it is shared with Elvio Jimenez. Left-handed pitcher out of Riverside, California, and nephew of career minor-league great Frank Shellenback; pitched parts of nine big-league seasons for four clubs from 1966 to 1977.
