About this card

This is one of the 25 manager cards in the 1969 Topps set - one for each of the 24 clubs, with Washington twice (#294 Jim Lemon, the outgoing manager, and #650 Ted Williams, hired that February). Nine of the 25 are Hall of Famers.

About Ted Williams

Topps caught Williams in his first season as a manager, nine years after his last game as a player. Running the Washington Senators in 1969, he guided them to an 86-76 record and a fourth-place finish. Card 539 is a shared card with Mike Epstein, a regular series-6 issue. His solo manager card, 650, is a high number from series 7, the tougher of the two to find. Together they are his only cards in the 1961-1969 Topps sets.

Ted Williams spent his entire 19-year major league career with the Boston Red Sox (1939-1942, 1946-1960), playing primarily in left field, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. His career was interrupted twice by military service: three years in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II, then portions of 1952 and 1953 as a Marine combat aviator in the Korean War. He finished with a .344 batting average, 521 home runs, 1,839 RBI and a .482 on-base percentage, the highest of all time. In 1941 he batted .406, and no American or National League hitter has topped .400 since. Williams won the Triple Crown in 1942 and 1947, took American League MVP honors in 1946 and 1949, won six batting titles and was an All-Star in 17 seasons. His last two batting crowns came in 1957 and 1958, at ages 39 and 40. His only World Series came in 1946, a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The baseball writers elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, his first year of eligibility. He later managed the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers from 1969 to 1972, and his work with the Jimmy Fund helped raise millions for cancer care and research.
