The story on this card
Card #99 is the Minnesota Twins entry in the 1969 Rookie Stars subset, pairing Morris with Graig Nettles. It comes from the first series and is his rookie card. Our checklist tracks two states: 99a with a black loop above 'Twins' and 99b with no black loop. Morris had just debuted after a 16-15 season at Triple-A Denver. In 1969 he worked three games for Minnesota, going 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in 5.1 innings; in his lone start he lost to the California Angels, with Rick Reichardt hitting a two-run homer off him. His final big league game came on June 29, 1969. Danny Morris was a hard-throwing Minnesota Twins prospect who twice won 16 games in the minors, pitched six games for the Twins in 1968 and 1969, and saw an arm injury end his career.
This Rookie Stars card, #99 in the 1969 Topps first print series, shares its front with Danny Morris, his Twins partner on the card. It is Nettles's rookie card. It caught him in his first full major-league season: in 1969 he batted .222 with 7 home runs and 26 RBI in 96 games, mostly in the outfield, for a Twins club that Baltimore swept in the ALCS. That December, Minnesota traded him to Cleveland. The card comes in two collectible states, one with a black loop printed above the word Twins and one without. A six-time All-Star third baseman and two-time Gold Glover whose glove work and 390 career home runs helped carry four Yankees pennant winners, including the 1977 and 1978 World Series champions.
