The story on this card

The 1970 Topps set opens with the New York Mets, labeled World Champions, as card #1 in the first series. The 1969 season began with an 11-10 loss to Montreal, the franchise's eighth straight Opening Day defeat. The expansion club of 1962 had gone 40-120. At 18-23 on May 27, the Mets then won 11 in a row. On August 14 they sat third, 10 games behind the Chicago Cubs. They went 38-11 down the stretch and finished 100-62, eight games clear of the Cubs in the new National League East. Gil Hodges managed; Tom Seaver won 25 games and the Cy Young Award, and a young Nolan Ryan pitched in his third season. The Mets swept Atlanta three games to none in the first NLCS, then beat Baltimore four games to one, with Donn Clendenon named World Series MVP.
