The story on this card
The Padres of 1969 were an expansion club in its first season, entering the National League alongside the Montreal Expos. Preston Gomez managed a roster built from the October 14, 1968 expansion draft, and San Diego went 52-110, last in the new National League West and 41 games behind the champion Atlanta Braves. The club finished last in the majors in runs (468), hits (1,203) and batting average (.225). Its pitchers gave up 746 runs. Home games were played at San Diego Stadium, with a season attendance of 512,970. Outfielder Dave Robinson was the only player the Padres signed from their 1968 June draft to reach the majors. Topps issued the team card as #657 in the seventh series of 1970, a high number.
