The story on this card
St. Louis went 87-75 in 1969 under Red Schoendienst and finished fourth in the new National League East, 13 games behind the New York Mets. The Cubs, managed by Leo Durocher, led the division for much of the summer before faltering. The Cardinals made a mid-season surge, but the Mets took the division. The pitching staff allowed 540 runs and posted a 2.94 team ERA, and Bob Gibson and Curt Flood both won Gold Gloves. Hall of Famers Lou Brock, Steve Carlton and Joe Torre were also on the roster. It was also the last year of grass at Busch Stadium before AstroTurf went in, and Harry Caray's final season on Cardinals broadcasts. Card #549 is the Cardinals team card in the sixth series of the 1970 Topps set.
