The story on this card
The 1970 Cubs opened 12-3 by April 27, a start no Cub team matched until 2020, and led at the end of April and May. Ernie Banks hit his 500th home run on May 12. A 12-game losing streak in June, including five straight to the Mets at Wrigley Field, ended the lead. Under Leo Durocher the club added Hoyt Wilhelm, Bob Miller and Tommy Davis in September, and on September 3 Billy Williams sat out after 1,117 straight games, then a National League record. Chicago stood one game behind Pittsburgh at the end of August and went 14-14 in September. A 14-game road trip to close the season left the Cubs 84-78, five games back in second place. Ron Santo played that trip despite death threats. The 1971 Topps team card #502 was printed in the fourth series.
