About this card

This is one of the seven checklist cards (#54, #123, #161, #206, #369, #499 and #619). Six of them list one print series each, and every series checklist after the first was printed in the series before the one it lists - #123 lists the second series and is a first-series card. #161 is the checklist for the Topps coins insert, not a series checklist. Four of them - #123, #206, #369 and #619 - come in more than one printing.

The story on this card

Card #161 in 1971 Topps, printed in the second series, is the Coins Checklist. It lists the 153 coins, each 1 1/2 inches across, that Topps inserted into specially marked packs. The coins ran in three groups of 51, packed with Series Two, Three and Four cards, with brass, chrome and blue backs in that order. The checklist runs from coin 1 Clarence Gaston to coin 153 Willie Mays. One catalog splits #161 into two printings: its trivia calls them large- and small-letter, and its checklist tells them apart by where the bottom of the card number lines up on the coin list. In one it sits level with coin 108 Reggie Jackson and an empty line, and in the other with coin 107 Tim McCarver and coin 153 Mays.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1971 Topps #161 card?

It is card #161 of the 752-card 1971 Topps Baseball set, Coins Checklist. Is #161 a series checklist?

No. #161 is the checklist for the 1971 Topps Coins, a separate 153-coin insert issued with the second, third and fourth series; the card itself is part of the 752, the coins are not. The Trading Card Database splits #161 into two printings: its trivia calls them large- and small-letter, and its checklist tells them apart by where the bottom of the card number lines up on the coin list. PSA lists a single #161 and the 761-card master set does not split it, so it is tracked here as one card.

How many cards are in the 1971 Topps Baseball set?

752 cards, tracked as 761 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 752 with none skipped, issued in six print series (132/131/130/130/120/109 cards), the sixth (#644-752) the high numbers; seven cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately - the #42, #265 and #306 photo pairs and the #123, #206, #369 and #619 checklists, #369 and #619 in three printings each.
