The story on this card
Detroit finished 1970 at 79-83, fourth in the American League East and 29 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. Mayo Smith managed a club that opened the year without Denny McLain, whom Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended in February; McLain missed the first 71 games and finished 3-5. Mickey Lolich went 14-19 with 230 strikeouts, and Willie Horton hit .305 with 17 home runs in 96 games. Jim Northrup hit 24 home runs with 80 RBI, and Tom Timmermann saved 27 games. Al Kaline, a Hall of Famer, hit .278 with 16 home runs and 71 RBI. The Tigers scored 666 runs, allowed 731 and drew 1,501,293 fans in their 59th season at Tiger Stadium. Their team card is #336 in 1971 Topps, printed in the third series.
