The story on this card
The 1970 Mets opened on April 7 at Forbes Field with the first Opening Day win in franchise history, 5-3 in 11 innings over Pittsburgh, ending an eight-game losing streak in season openers. Donn Clendenon, the 1969 World Series MVP, delivered a two-run pinch-hit single against his former team, and Tug McGraw pitched a scoreless 11th to close it. Gil Hodges' club finished 83-79, third in the National League East, six games behind the Pirates. New York scored 695 runs, allowed 630 and posted a 3.45 team ERA, playing home games at Shea Stadium. The roster included Hall of Fame pitchers Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, and Hodges himself is in the Hall. This is 1971 Topps #641, the New York Mets team card, from the fifth series.
