About this card

This is one of the 24 team cards, one for each club, opening with #1, the 1970 World Champions Baltimore Orioles. Every club also has a manager card of its own, separate from its team card. 1971 was the Washington Senators' last season before the club moved to Texas and became the Rangers in 1972; #462 is their team card.

The story on this card

The 1970 Phillies finished 73-88, fifth in the National League East and 15 and a half games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates, in the last season of home games at Connie Mack Stadium before Veterans Stadium opened. Frank Lucchesi managed the club, and Jim Bunning, the Hall of Fame right-hander, had returned to the Phillies that year. Injuries shaped the year. On May 2 Tim McCarver broke a finger on a Willie Mays foul tip, and replacement Mike Ryan broke his own finger two batters later when Willie McCovey slid into him at home. With catchers short in June, bullpen coach Doc Edwards was activated and caught a Bunning and Dick Selma two-hitter. Seven more players went down beginning May 22, among them Don Money and Oscar Gamble. This is the Philadelphia Phillies team card, #268 in the 1971 Topps series three.
