The story on this card
St. Louis went 76-86 in 1970 and finished fourth in the National League East, 13 games behind Pittsburgh. The win total was the club's lowest since the days of the 154-game schedule. Red Schoendienst managed a roster that included Hall of Famers Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Joe Torre, Steve Carlton and Dick Allen. Gibson won the Cy Young Award and a Gold Glove with 23 wins, a 3.12 ERA and 274 strikeouts, and Carlton struck out 16 batters in one game. Vic Davalillo collected 24 pinch hits, breaking the National League record. Third baseman Mike Shannon was limited to 52 games and soon retired because of a kidney disease. Curt Flood had filed his suit against baseball's reserve clause on January 16, 1970, after refusing a trade to the Phillies. It was the first of 26 seasons of AstroTurf at Busch Memorial Stadium. The Cardinals team card is #308 in the 1971 Topps series three.
