1972 Topps #621 Commissioners Award

About this card
Cards #621-626 are the six Awards cards, which picture trophies, not players: the Commissioner's Award, Most Valuable Player Award, Cy Young Award, Minor League Player of the Year Award, Rookie of the Year Award and Babe Ruth Award.
The story on this card
The Commissioners Award trophy is part of the Awards group in the 1972 Topps set, #621 through #626, a group that Topps introduced that year alongside Boyhood Photos, In Action cards and Traded cards. Card #621 pictures the trophy alone. The 1971 Commissioner's Award, the humanitarian honor, went to Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants. That award is now the Roberto Clemente Award, and Mays was its inaugural winner. He hit 18 home runs that season for a Giants club that won the NL West and lost the NL Championship Series to the Pirates in four games. Mays has his own card in the set at #49, with an In Action card at #50. The card was printed in the fifth series.
