1972 Topps #404 Jeff Torborg

About Jeff Torborg
Torborg appeared in 59 games for the 1972 Angels, 58 of them at catcher, and hit .209. Among the Angels' catchers, he and Art Kusnyer each started 54 games, and John Stephenson started 37. Topps placed his #404 in the fourth series of its 1972 set, and the card carries the California Angels.
Jeff Torborg was a defensive catcher who could handle a pitching staff, playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a starter until 1973, his last season. Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973. That made him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI. After his playing days Torborg became a manager, coach and broadcaster. He led the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.
