About this card

The story on this card

The 1971 Twins finished 74-86, fifth in the American League West, under manager Bill Rigney. The Twins drew 940,858 to Metropolitan Stadium, their first season under one million since moving to Minnesota. The team still sent five men to the All-Star Game: Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Leo Cardenas, Tony Oliva and Jim Perry. Killebrew hit career home runs 500 and 501 off Baltimore's Mike Cuellar on August 10. Oliva won his third batting title at .337 and led the league with a .546 slugging percentage, while Cesar Tovar led the league with 204 hits. Perry went 17-17, Bert Blyleven 16-15 and Jim Kaat 13-14, and Kaat collected his tenth Gold Glove. Cardenas posted a .985 fielding percentage, the best by an American League shortstop to that point. Topps issued the club's team card as #156, printed in the second series.
