The story on this card
Oakland won the American League West in 1971 with a 101-60 record under Dick Williams, the best mark of the Swingin' A's years and the club's first postseason berth of any kind since 1931. Vida Blue, the Cy Young and MVP winner, was the first black player to win the AL Cy Young Award and appeared on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time. The roster also carried Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers and infielder Tony La Russa. The staff posted a 3.05 ERA with 57 complete games, and the team hit 160 home runs. Baltimore swept the Athletics in three games in the ALCS. Topps put the Oakland A's team card at #454 in the fourth series of 1972. The 1971 season was the last in which the club wore vest-style uniforms.
