About this card

The story on this card

The 1971 Phillies went 67-95 under manager Frank Lucchesi and finished sixth in the National League East, 30 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. They opened Veterans Stadium on April 10 with a 4-1 win over the Montreal Expos, and Harry Kalas, hired that year to succeed Bill Campbell, was master of ceremonies. Rick Wise pitched a no-hitter against the Reds on June 23 and hit two home runs in the 4-0 win. On June 25, Willie Stargell hit what became the longest home run in Veterans Stadium history, off Hall of Famer Jim Bunning in a 14-4 Pirates win. Second-round draft pick Mike Schmidt signed on June 11 and spent the rest of the year at Reading. The club scored 558 runs and allowed 688. Topps issued the Phillies team card as #397 in the fourth series of the 1972 set.
