The story on this card
The 1972 Atlanta Braves slipped to 70-84 and fourth place in the National League West after an 82-80 season in 1971. The club was 18-22 on June 1 when general manager Paul Richards was moved to a scouting role and farm director Eddie Robinson replaced him. Manager Lum Harris was fired on August 6 with the Braves at 47-57 and 16 games behind Cincinnati, and first-base coach Eddie Mathews, 40, took over; the team went 23-27 under him. Mathews, Hank Aaron, Phil Niekro and Orlando Cepeda are the Hall of Famers tied to the club that year, and Aaron closed the 1973 season with 713 home runs, one short of Babe Ruth's record. Topps #521 is the Atlanta Braves team card, printed in the fourth series.
