The story on this card
The 1972 Reds played under the theme of redemption after a 1971 slide. Sparky Anderson's club had dropped from 102 wins in 1970 to 79 in 1971, and on November 29, 1971, it traded for Joe Morgan in the deal that sent Lee May to Houston. The Reds finished 95-59 and won the National League West by 10 1/2 games. Johnny Bench hit 40 home runs, led the majors with 125 RBI and won his second MVP award in three years. Morgan scored 122 runs and stole 58 bases. Cincinnati took the pennant over Pittsburgh in five games, Bench tying the finale with a ninth-inning home run. Oakland beat the Reds in the World Series, winning Game 7 by 3-2, the sixth one-run game of the series. This team card, #641 from the fifth series, is a high number.
