The story on this card

The 1972 Phillies went 59-97 and finished last in the National League East in their second season at Veterans Stadium. Steve Carlton, acquired from St. Louis for Rick Wise on February 25, won 27 games and the Cy Young Award. He led the league with a 1.97 ERA, 310 strikeouts and 346 1/3 innings. He accounted for 45.8 percent of the club's wins, and the team was 30-85 in games he did not pitch. Manager Frank Lucchesi was fired on July 10 with the club at 26-50, and Paul Owens, promoted from farm director to general manager a month earlier, took over the dugout as well. Mike Schmidt debuted on September 12. Topps #536 is the Philadelphia Phillies team card, a high number from the fifth series.
