The story on this card
Atlanta finished fifth in the National League West in 1973 at 76-85 under manager Eddie Mathews, and the headline belonged to Hank Aaron. At 39, he hit 40 home runs in 392 at bats and reached 713 on September 29, one short of Babe Ruth. He went homerless against Houston in the last game, leaving the record for 1974. Darrell Evans hit 41 and Davey Johnson 43, making the Braves the first team with three 40-homer hitters; it was the only 40-homer season of Johnson's career. Phil Niekro went 13-10 with a 3.31 ERA in 245 innings. Card #483 is the Atlanta Braves team card in the 1974 Topps team subset. The 1974 Topps set opened with six Aaron tribute cards (#1-6), headed by one calling him the new all-time home run king.
