The story on this card
Card #211 in 1974 Topps is the Chicago Cubs team card, reporting a 1973 season that came apart in summer. On June 29 the Cubs stood 47-31 with an 8.5-game lead in the National League East. They then lost 33 of their next 42, including 11 straight in August. A division so weak it was called the National League Least kept them alive, and September 30 found them still in contention under Whitey Lockman. Doubleheaders were ordered for 10 AM at lightless Wrigley Field, and a five-way tie at 80-82 was possible. The Mets won the second game that day and eliminated the Cubs, who ended 77-84 in fifth place. The roster carried Fergie Jenkins, Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Tony La Russa, all later Hall of Famers. Milt Pappas lost his shot at a 100th National League win when the October 1 nightcap was rained out.
