1974 Topps #229 Fritz Peterson

About Fritz Peterson
In 1973 Peterson went 8-15 with a 3.95 ERA, and he and Mike Kekich announced their family swap at spring training. He made 31 starts and struck out 59 in 184 1/3 innings. His 1974 Topps card, #229, shows him with the Yankees, but on April 26, 1974 he went to Cleveland with Steve Kline, Fred Beene and Tom Buskey for Chris Chambliss, Dick Tidrow and Cecil Upshaw. He finished that season 9-14.
Fritz Peterson was a left-handed pitcher who spent 1966 to 1976 in the majors with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of Northern Illinois University, he joined the New York rotation as a rookie in 1966 and posted a career record of 133-131. His best year came in 1970, when he went 20-11 and earned his only All-Star selection. Peterson led the American League in fewest walks per nine innings five years running, 1968 through 1972, and his lifetime ERA at the original Yankee Stadium was the best of any Yankee who pitched there. Traded to Cleveland in April 1974, he pitched two more seasons before finishing his career with the Rangers in 1976. Writers who covered the Yankees voted him the 1970 Good Guy Award.
