About this card

This is one of the 24 team cards, one for each club. Managers have cards of their own this year, separate from the team cards, and the Athletics, Yankees and Padres have a team card but no manager card. #246 reads "Oakland A's" on the front, and #226 San Diego Padres is one of the cards also printed with "Washington Nat'l Lea." as the team name.

The story on this card

The 1973 Padres, who played at San Diego Stadium, went 60-102 under Don Zimmer, sixth in the National League West, and scored 548 runs while allowing 770. On June 19, Dave Winfield, straight from the University of Minnesota with no minor league games behind him, debuted against Houston and went 1-for-4. Mike Caldwell led the staff with 10 saves. The franchise was also in limbo: it was sold in May 1973 with a move to Washington planned, and a prototype red, white and blue uniform was shown. Ray Kroc bought the club in January 1974 and kept it in San Diego. Topps was mid-run on its 1974 set, so the team card #226 exists with the city line reading Washington "Nat'l Lea." as well as the common San Diego printing.
