About Lefty Grove
Card #350 places Grove in the All-Time All-Stars subset with the Philadelphia Athletics; Mickey Cochrane, his catcher there, is also honored in it. Grove pitched in three World Series for Philadelphia. Wary of the Cubs' right-handed hitters, Connie Mack did not start him in the 1929 Series, and he struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings of relief. He won two games in each of the next two Series, both against St. Louis.
Lefty Grove was a left-handed pitcher who won 300 games and lost 141 over 17 seasons, 1925 to 1941, with the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. Jack Dunn kept him at Baltimore of the International League through 1924, then sold him to Connie Mack for $100,600. He led the American League in strikeouts in each of his first seven seasons and took a record nine ERA titles. From 1929 to 1931 he went 20-6, 28-5 and 31-4 for three straight Athletics pennant winners, and he won the pitching Triple Crown in 1930 and 1931. His 1931 line of 31 wins and a 2.06 ERA earned the league's Most Valuable Player award. Mack traded him to Boston in December 1933, and an arm injury cut his first Red Sox year to 8-8. He came back to lead the league in ERA four times between 1935 and 1939, then won his 300th game on July 25, 1941. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1947 and died in Norwalk, Ohio, in 1975.
