The story on this card
Boston followed its 1975 pennant with an 83-79 season and a third-place finish in the American League East, 15 and a half games behind the Yankees. Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice and Fergie Jenkins were on the roster. An off-season contract dispute with Fred Lynn was a distraction, and in early May a brawl with the Yankees left Bill Lee with a shoulder injury that kept him out until mid-1977. On June 15 Charlie Finley of the Athletics tried to sell Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to Boston for $1 million each, but Commissioner Bowie Kuhn voided the sales. Owner Tom Yawkey died in July, and Darrell Johnson, 41-45 at the helm, was fired and replaced by coach Don Zimmer, who went 42-34. Topps card #309 in the 1977 set shows the team with Zimmer in an inset photo.
