About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for each club. Twenty-four carry their manager; the two clubs that debuted in 1977, #113 Toronto Blue Jays and #597 Seattle Mariners, carry the manager and his coaches instead.

The story on this card

The 1977 Mariners brought baseball back to Seattle, which had no major league team since the Pilots left for Milwaukee in April 1970. They opened April 6 in the Kingdome with a 7-0 loss to the Angels in front of 57,762. Designated hitter Juan Bernhardt hit the first home run in club history. Leroy Stanton led the team with 27 home runs and tied Dan Meyer for the RBI lead at 90, while Ruppert Jones hit 24 and went to the All-Star Game as a reserve. Glenn Abbott's 12 wins led the starters, and Enrique Romo saved 16 with a 2.83 ERA. Seattle finished 64-98, sixth in the AL West and 38 games behind Kansas City, narrowly avoiding the last place that went to Oakland. Darrell Johnson, hired in September 1976 as the club's first manager, shares card #597 with coaches Don Bryant, Jim Busby, Vada Pinson and Wes Stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1977 Topps #597 card?

It is card #597 of the 660-card 1977 Topps Baseball set, picturing the Seattle Mariners. This is one of the 26 team cards, one for each club. Twenty-four carry their manager; the two clubs that debuted in 1977, #113 Toronto Blue Jays and #597 Seattle Mariners, carry the manager and his coaches instead.

Why does the #597 Seattle Mariners team card carry coaches?

Seattle was one of the two clubs that debuted in 1977, and both expansion team cards carry the manager and his coaches instead of the manager alone: #597 names Darrell Johnson with Don Bryant, Jim Busby, Vada Pinson and Wes Stock. #113 Toronto Blue Jays is the other one; the remaining 24 team cards carry the manager only. Both expansion cards are heavily airbrushed, since neither club had earlier photography to draw on.

How many cards are in the 1977 Topps Baseball set?

660 cards, numbered 1 through 660 with none skipped and distributed as a single series. No card carries a catalogued print variation, so the base set and the master set are the same 660 cards.
