About Ed Kirkpatrick

Milwaukee released Kirkpatrick on March 21, 1978, though his Brewers card appeared at #77 in that year's Topps set. He had hit .222 across Pittsburgh, Texas and Milwaukee in 1977. In 70 games he had one home run and 13 RBI.

Ed Kirkpatrick caught and played the outfield during 16 major league seasons, beginning with the Angels in 1962. He later played for Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Texas and Milwaukee, appearing in the National League Championship Series with the Pirates in 1974 and 1975. The left-handed hitter finished with 824 hits and a .238 average in 1,311 games. He hit 85 home runs and drove in 424 runs. His nickname, 'Spanky,' came from his resemblance to Little Rascals actor Spanky McFarland. A 1981 car accident left Kirkpatrick in a coma for five and a half months and caused lasting paralysis. He died of throat cancer in Mission Viejo, California, on November 15, 2010, at 66.
