About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for every club. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers also has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.

The story on this card

Kansas City went 102-60 in 1977 under Whitey Herzog, a franchise best and the most in the majors, and took its second straight AL West title. Hal McRae led the league with 54 doubles and Al Cowens set a club record with 112 runs batted in. George Brett, a future Hall of Famer, hit .312 with 22 home runs and 88 RBI. The pitching staff allowed 651 runs and threw 15 shutouts. On June 12 at Milwaukee, thieves stole the Royals' gloves and uniforms, and all but seven players wore Brewers road uniforms that day. The postseason ended as it had the year before: the Yankees beat the Royals 3-2 in the ALCS, with Games 3 through 5 played at Royals Stadium. Topps #724 is the Royals team card for 1978; the 1977 club drew 1,852,603 fans to Royals Stadium.
