About this card

This is one of the 26 team cards, one for each club, and each also carries the club's manager - there are no separate manager cards in 1979.

The story on this card

The Dodgers of 1978 won a second straight National League pennant under Tom Lasorda, finishing 95-67 and beating the Phillies three games to one in the NLCS. The World Series went the same way as the year before, with the Yankees winning in six. Reggie Smith led the club with 29 home runs, after four Dodgers had reached 30 the previous year. Coach Jim Gilliam died at season's end and his number 19 was retired before Game 1 of the World Series. On August 20, before a game in New York, Steve Garvey and Don Sutton wrestled in the clubhouse over a newspaper article in which Sutton was quoted calling Smith the team's best player. Card #526 pairs the team with its manager.

Tom Lasorda - left-handed pitcher turned Hall of Fame manager who ran the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1976 to 1996, winning four National League pennants and the 1981 and 1988 World Series. He later led the United States to Olympic gold at Sydney in 2000.
