The story on this card
The 1978 Oakland Athletics opened 19-5 and stood 24-15 in first place when Bobby Winkles resigned in late May because of owner Charlie Finley's constant second-guessing. Jack McKeon, who had been fired from the same job the previous June, took over the dugout and is the manager on the Topps team card #328. Oakland was still 61-56 through 117 games, then went 8-37 down the stretch to finish 69-93, sixth in the AL West. McKeon's share of the year was 45-78. Billy North, the last man left from the 1974 champions, went to the Dodgers in May, and Vida Blue had been dealt to the Giants before the season. Finley had agreed in December 1977 to sell the club to Denver oilman Marvin Davis for 12.5 million dollars, a deal that would have moved the franchise to Denver.
Jack McKeon managed in the majors for the Royals, Athletics, Padres, Reds and Marlins, winning the 2003 World Series at age 72. As Padres general manager he earned the name Trader Jack and assembled the 1984 pennant winner.
