About Billy Nattress
William Wallace "Billy" Nattress was a career minor-league infielder who never reached the major leagues. Born September 7, 1878, in Girardsville, Pennsylvania, and educated at Bucknell University, the slightly built (5-foot-6, 154-pound) shortstop batted left-handed and threw right-handed. He hit a career-best .282 for the Fort Wayne Railroaders of the Western Association around 1901 before settling in as the everyday shortstop for the Buffalo Bisons of the Eastern League, where he spent roughly eight seasons over the first decade of the 1900s (batting .256 in 1907). Nicknamed "Natty," he was the shortstop on Buffalo's 1906 Eastern League pennant winners—the Bisons' second flag in three years—and figured in that fall's postseason series against the American Association champions. He moved to the Montreal Royals in 1910 and shifted to second base for the balance of a roughly 12-year professional career. As a Buffalo regular during the T206 era he earned a card in the famous set, though as a minor-leaguer with no big-league service he ranks among its more obscure subjects rather than its scarce marquee stars. Nattress died December 28, 1956, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania.
