About Fred Burchell
Frederick Duff Burchell (July 14, 1879 - November 20, 1951) was a left-handed pitcher who broke into pro ball with the 1902 Evansville River Rats of the Three-I League, where he even led the league in batting at .352. Philadelphia purchased his contract, and he debuted with the Phillies in 1903 before starring in the Eastern League for the Baltimore Orioles, winning 24 games in 1905 and 20 in 1906. The Boston Red Sox brought him back to the majors from 1907 to 1909, his best year being 1908 (10-8). Across 49 big-league games he went 13-15 with a sparkling 2.93 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 285-2/3 innings - never posting a season ERA above 3.00, though the Boston Globe blamed his "lack of control." Boston sold him to Buffalo in July 1909, the Eastern/International League affiliation shown on this common T206 card. He later owned and managed the Syracuse Stars and skippered Newark. Burchell is not a Hall of Famer.
